Your Ideal Garage Doors

Garage Doors are something you don't think about until you need to replace them. Then, it becomes confusing because there are so many things to consider. So, how do you go about picking the right ones out?

The ideal garage doors have four main qualities - beautiful, durable, easy to maintain, and well insulated.

When considering beauty, you need to consider your home and what does it look like - what is its architectural style. If the outside of your home has a lot of straight lines, you want your doors to reflect that. If the windows on your home have arches, you may want to select doors that have arches. The entry closure to your garage needs to be similar to your home's architecture and similar in color.

Once you've found some that complement your house, you need to consider durability. You certainly don't want to have to replace them all that often. These doors need to survive the environment that you're putting them in. For example, if you're replacing garage doors in Florida, you want them to be able to survive the high winds of a hurricane. Or, if you have a basketball hoop mounted above the entry to your garage, you want them to be able to survive a bouncing basketball. Select them so that they are appropriate for their environment.

They need to be low in maintenance, and not all are. If you install wood doors (because they complement your home's architecture), keep in mind that every 2-3 years that you may have to re-finish them. Or, even re-stain them. Those made out of steel, on the other hand, are virtually maintenance free.

The best ones have the perfect amount of insulation. Insulation is measured by its "R" value which measures the amount of resistance to heat and cold. The "R" value will be reported and found in the products literature.

Not all garage doors are insulated. If you're putting them on a house that has rooms next to the garage or above it, it's recommended that you install doors that are insulated. This insulation will help you keep those adjacent rooms comfortable with lower energy costs. But, if you're putting them on an exterior building that's used mostly for storage, insulation may not be required.

Lastly, when selecting doors, make sure that the weather-stripping on the bottom of them is replaceable. You don't want air to be able to blow underneath your insulated garage doors.
